Dubois Wyoming – A Photo Journal by Bill Dahl

Every September Reggie (my 8 year old Black Lab) and I take a sabbatical to enjoy autumn in the western U.S. – We call it The BRAVO Tour – (Bill and Reggie’s Adventures Visiting the Outdoors).

Each year I spend months researching new areas in the western U.S. where we have yet to explore. I came across Dubois, Wyoming and put it on our itinerary for September 2015. I am ecstatic I did…it’s now a place that simply calls you back…already have it on my itinerary for next year (going to fish with Billy Rice from North Carolina while Reggie plays with Debbie).

I will ADD to the Dubois Photo ALBUM as our visit here continues so check back (refresh your browser)and CLICK THE LINK TO THE DUBOIS PHOTO ALBUM BELOW again – for new images.

 ENJOY!!!

More on Dubois, Wyoming below:

The SPECTACULAR scenery, wonderful/kind/helpful people, outdoor recreation opportunities second to none (fishing? – numerous species of trout fill the rivers and streams,), hiking, hunting, camping, exploring, great artisans, incredible geology, fantastic restaurants, GREAT FLY SHOP (Marlow’s Fly Shop – see Brad and Kris), mountain biking, winter sports, great weather, the BEST riverside (mainstream Wind River) Lodge and RV Resort I have encountered in the western U.S. (Longhorn Ranch Lodge and RV Resort – Randy, Sue and Chip run the place and they are awesome). This is a photographer’s nirvana.

The village of Dubois is surrounded by the Shoshone National Forest, The Fitzpatrick Wilderness (south) and the Absaroka Mountain Range. Just outside town you can drive south and enjoy The National Bighorn Sheep area. Make sure to visit the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center in downtown Dubois BEFORE you venture out as the information they provide will make your visit vastly more enjoyable.

Make sure you drive north out of town (two separate roads) into the Absaroka mountains…the pavement ends a few miles out of town but is well maintained. Get up to the Horse Creek Campground and beyond – to the Double Cabin Campground area for the phenomenal vistas of the massive peaks that surround you.

South of Dubois (3 miles) take a left turn (north) and get on Forest Service Road 511 to travel along the east fork of the Wind River and enjoy the vast and magnificent scenery – Ram’ s Horn is the peak that will get your attention…trust me.

If you’re out and about, this is Grizzly and Black bear country…ALWAYS have bear spray with you (EACH individual) – know how to use it (test it before you go out) and become familiar with making noise and how to handle a bear encounter when you venture out. BE BEAR AWARE in this area. Period.

The rivers and streams have cutthroat, rainbow, brown, brook and some golden trout. Guides and outfitters can be arranged through Marlow’s Fly Shop in Dubois. You can also float the Wind River Canyon.

Reggie and I always appreciate your feedback – some make some comments on our website here would ya please? 1. Dear Bill,
I hope this message finds you well. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful photography of Dubois WY and surroundings. I’m a Belgian guy, 26 years old and I’ll be visiting Grand Teton and Yellowstone in early June, and we are also planning a stop at Dubois for some small-town experience and the great scenery. Your pictures have absolutely convinced me of the mesmerizing beauty of this region. I just had one question: we’d love to wander around in the badlands and I’ve seen some pictures with beautiful painted hills and majestic mountain ranges in the back. I wondered what the best place is to explore these badlands for hiking and photography. There is so little information available about this remote place.
Thanks so much in advance, and best wishes,
    Ortwin

  2. Ortwin – wondering if you went to Dubois, WY and enjoyed the area as much as we do. We fished the lake up on Togwotee Pass in late June. It was fantastic. The Wind River was VERY high this year though…
