Recently Read: By Bill Dahl

Okay…okay…I get emails every week asking me what I am reading. So here’s a list of what I have recently read (MOST are for research regarding a book I am currently writing…(Nope – won’t tell so don’t ask – it’s a two year project – look for it in LATE 2018):

  1. The House of Morgan – An American Banking Dynasty and the Rise of Modern Finance – Honestly, a historical treasure. Winner of the National Book Award.

2. America’s Bank: The Epic Struggle to Create the Federal Reserve – by Roger Lowenstein – I adore anything Roger writes.

3. Origins of the CrashThe Great Bubble and Its Undoing – by Roger Lowenstein – An uncharacteristically harsh critique from the pen of Lowenstein. However, for its historical relevance for me, another treasure from Roger.

4. The Empire Express – Building the First Transcontinental Railroad – by  David Haward Bain – LOVE LOVE LOVE this author and writer. WOW! What a story by a splendid story teller. This book will absolutely captivate you via the author’s research and his uncanny ability to share the personalities of the principal players and their interactions.

5. Jay Cooke’s Gamble – The Northern Pacific Railroad, The Sioux and the Panic of 1873 – by M. John Lubetkin – A Tremendous Story that will fill in details of American History that you had been completely unaware of. Superb writer and researcher.

6. The Panic of 1819 – Reactions and Policies by Murray N. Rothbard – A Political science and economic policy classic. I truly enjoyed it.

7. New ERA – Reflections on The Human and Natural History of Central Oregon by Jarold Ramsey – A priceless contribution to the cultural landscape of Central Oregon. ADORED IT!!!

8. East of the Cascades – Philip Brogan – A historical and sociological (geological) classic as it relates to Central Oregon.

More to come in my next post…some of my reading is currently 6-700 page volumes with microscopic print so it takes more time to complete them.

ENJOY!

The Director by David Ignatius

It’s rare to read a story – with practical, present and future implications – as powerful and insightful as The Director. David Ignatius is the master of spy thrillers…PERIOD!

With an incomparable window into the people, practices, challenges, history and chaos that inhabits the web of U.S. intelligence institutions – Ignatius delivers a “can’t put this damn thing down” – spellbinding – literary masterpiece! Ignatius also possesses a bonafide concern for the future of this ever-sprawling enterprise.

This is my first David Ignatius novel. I’ll be looking for ALL his previous novels. He’s turned this reader into an Ignatius carnivore.

A fantastic book! Look for the movie from Sony Pictures.

A Wolf Called Romeo – by Nick Jans

THE BEST man-wild animal book I have EVER read. PERIOD.

I ordered this book as a member of the Amazon Vine program. This story is a treasure. It’s a gift…a unique and wonderful journey.

My favorite, all-time man-dog book is Merle’s Door: Lessons from a Free-thinking Dog by Ted Kerasote.

Enter Nick Jans with his book entitled A Wolf Called Romeo. This is unequivocally THE BEST man-wild animal book I have EVER read. PERIOD.

Jans uses his life experience as an author, naturalist, experienced outdoorsman, investigative journalist and photographer to weave a wonderful story.

The essence of the book (for me) is characterized in the following excerpt:

“Running a Darwinian gauntlet that demanded constant adaptation and complex responses, with scant margin for error, he had accomplished what few large predators ever had, or will: he lived near, even among, thousands of humans over most of his life – not just a shadowed presence or camp follower,, but as an independent, socially interactive creature whose territory overlapped our own – without the benefit of a large-scale preserve. Through this time among us, he remained his own gatekeeper, his comings and goings defining the ever-shifting boundary between worlds, rendering our own surveys and markers meaningless.” (excerpt from page 185 – my uncorrected proof).

Like I’ve said – THE BEST man-wild animal book I have EVER read. PERIOD. Like I said – THE BEST man-wild animal book I have EVER read. PERIOD. This book should be required reading for wildllfe biology students and practitioners everywhere!!! When it comes to understanding the wolf ( I hike in northeastern Oregon –  Eagle Cap Wilderness – where wolves are now becoming re-established ) hikers, civilians, researchers, ranchers, naturalists and environmentalists would ALL be well-served by consuming this work. BUY IT! READ IT! LEARN FROM IT! – as we have vastly more to learn about this creature – and its interaction with man (and man’s interaction with the wolf).

Buy it! Savor it. Look for Nick Jans and go meet him at an author appearance. You’ll be blessed by this true story. I certainly was. I promise. PERIOD.

Young God: A Novel by Katherine Faw Morris – A Review by Bill Dahl

Visceral – Raw – Backwater – Shocking – Sick – Magnetic…BLACKJACK!

FSG took a BIG risk with this debut novel – and this debut novelist. A BIG RISK! Young God – A Novel – is not for everyone. Young God is really an experiment. Yet somehow – someway – it worked!  This move by FSG was akin to taking a hit on 17 in blackjack…when the dealer was showing a pair of five’s.

Katherine Faw Morris is NOW a discovered, terribly unique — talent. PERIOD! I must admit this novel had me thinking “What the _____? Where’s this going? Do human beings really live, think, behave and converse like this? What do they look like?”
