Flathead River Fly Fishing

This photo album contains images I captured on our July 2017 float trip fly fishing the middle fork of the Flathead River. Our guide was Chris from Glacier Anglers near the West Glacier N.P. entrance.

We floated 12 miles of the river in one full day and were mesmerized by the angry and hungry Cutthroat trout (barbless hooks and catch and release ONLY),  Mountain goats as well!!!

A fantastic day in Montana!!!

Brooks Lake – Wyoming

This photo album is our fly fishing trip on Brooks Lake in late June 2017 with guide (EXTRAORDINAIRE) Mark QuigleyBrooks Lake is situated within a high mountain basin in the Rocky Mountains at 9200 feet above sea level. It is one mile from the North American Continental Divide and has spectacular views of the Pinnacle Buttes, Austin’s Peak, and Brooks Mountain…..and the Rainbow TROUT are HUNGRY and PLENTIFUL!!!

This is one of the most gorgeous natural landscapes in the Rockies, outside the National Parks (and FAR FEWER PEOPLE!!!). Make sure you call Mark Quigley at 602-690-5901 to arrange a fly fishing and outdoor adventure that you will ALWAYS treasure.

Beware – the lake and lodge are situated in the midst of Grizzly Bear country. BE BEAR AWARE!!! ALWAYS CARRY BEAR SPRAY IN THIS AREA…AND STAY ALERT!!!

These are high quality images NOT intended to be viewed on a cell phone. CLICK HERE to go to the photo album – then – go to FULL SCREEN and/or SLIDE SHOW — or – just click on the image below.

ENJOY! We certainly did!!!

The North Umpqua River

Renowned as one of the most scenic rivers in the U.S. – The North Umpqua River is amazing, breathtaking, majestic and inspiring – to say the least.  It is the headquarters for fly fisher persons who come to embrace the challenge of the trout, steelhead and salmon fishing the North Umpqua uniquely offers.

The river weaves it’s way through the Umpqua National Forest. You can hike the North Umpqua Trail, visit Susan Creek Falls, and watch Salmon and Steelhead surmount the falls at the Swiftwater Park .

ENJOY!!! We certainly did – and will in the years to come.

The Steamboat Inn

Nestled on the north shore of the North Umpqua River is one of the gems of the Pacific Northwest – the Steamboat Inn. If you blink, you might miss it as the presence on Highway 138 is surrounded by gorgeous plant life.

Steamboat Inn is noted for – among many things – it’s superb location on the edge of one of the most scenic rivers in the U.S. – The North Umpqua River.  It is the headquarters for fly fisherpersons who come to embrace the challenge of the trout, steelhead and salmon fishing the North Umpqua uniquely offers.

The Umpqua National Forest surrounds Steamboat Inn. You can hike the North Umpqua Trail, visit Susan Creek Falls, and watch Salmon and Steelhead surmount the falls at the Swiftwater Park area a few miles away.

The accommodations,  fine dining, wines, chef, innkeepers and staff are first class. The fly shop and guide services are 5 Star.

Yet, I am always mesmerized by the gardens at the Steamboat Inn. On recent trips in July and August 2016, I captured the images I am SHARING LINKS TO BELOW of the phenomenal flora that inhabits this paradise.

More on Dubois, Wyoming below:

The SPECTACULAR scenery, wonderful/kind/helpful people, outdoor recreation opportunities second to none (fishing? – numerous species of trout fill the rivers and streams,), hiking, hunting, camping, exploring, great artisans, incredible geology, fantastic restaurants, GREAT FLY SHOP (Marlow’s Fly Shop – see Brad and Kris), mountain biking, winter sports, great weather, the BEST riverside (mainstream Wind River) Lodge and RV Resort I have encountered in the western U.S. (Longhorn Ranch Lodge and RV Resort – Randy, Sue and Chip run the place and they are awesome). This is a photographer’s nirvana.

The village of Dubois is surrounded by the Shoshone National Forest, The Fitzpatrick Wilderness (south) and the Absaroka Mountain Range. Just outside town you can drive south and enjoy The National Bighorn Sheep area. Make sure to visit the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center in downtown Dubois BEFORE you venture out as the information they provide will make your visit vastly more enjoyable.

Make sure you drive north out of town (two separate roads) into the Absaroka mountains…the pavement ends a few miles out of town but is well maintained. Get up to the Horse Creek Campground and beyond – to the Double Cabin Campground area for the phenomenal vistas of the massive peaks that surround you.

South of Dubois (3 miles) take a left turn (north) and get on Forest Service Road 511 to travel along the east fork of the Wind River and enjoy the vast and magnificent scenery – Ram’ s Horn is the peak that will get your attention…trust me.

If you’re out and about, this is Grizzly and Black bear country…ALWAYS have bear spray with you (EACH individual) – know how to use it (test it before you go out) and become familiar with making noise and how to handle a bear encounter when you venture out. BE BEAR AWARE in this area. Period.

The rivers and streams have cutthroat, rainbow, brown, brook and some golden trout. Guides and outfitters can be arranged through Marlow’s Fly Shop in Dubois. You can also float the Wind River Canyon.
