Wildlife Photography by Bill Dahl

The following photo album includes the wildlife I was able to photograph during 2017. You will see all kinds of creatures from Rocky Mountain Goats, Mountain sheep, Pronghorn, Elk, Deer…and a few shots of trout I caught this summer.

Some of these images were captured in Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Glacier National Parks. There’s no place like Wyoming and Montana for wildlife photography.

These are high quality images NOT intended to be viewed on a cell phone. These are copyrighted images and ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

The American West – A Photo Journal by Bill Dahl

This post includes a photo album of our Summer of 2017 journey around the American West. It was nearly a month long and encompassed some 5,000 miles.

The journey began in Redmond, Oregon to Boise, Idaho to Rexburg, Idaho to Swan Valley, Idaho to Alpine, Wyoming to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to Grand Teton National Park to Dubois, Wyoming to the North Platte River in Alcova, Wyoming (by Casper) to Thermopolis, Wyoming to Cody, Wyoming up the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway and over Beartooth Pass to Red Lodge Montana, back over Beartooth to Cooke City, Montana then into the Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park to Gardiner, MT to Cutbank, MT to East Glacier National Park (St. Mary, MT) to Whitefish, MT and West Glacier National Park – then – back home to Redmond, OR.

There are some landscape and wildlife images in this photo journal that in 35 years exploring the outdoots as a photographer, I must admit, I was awed to be confronted with. We hope you enjoy them. ALL images are copyrighted and ALL Rights Reserved.

The Horses of Dubois Wyoming

Every September Reggie (my 8 year old Black Lab) and I take a sabbatical to enjoy autumn in the western U.S. – We call it The BRAVO Tour – (Bill and Reggie’s Adventures Visiting the Outdoors).

Each year I spend months researching new areas in the western U.S. where we have yet to explore. I came across Dubois, Wyoming and put it on our itinerary for September 2015. I am ecstatic I did…You will be too! Trust us!!!

These particular images are of the gorgeous creatures Reggie and I ran onto grazing in the mountains above Dubois, Wyoming one day.

More on Dubois, Wyoming below:

The SPECTACULAR scenery, wonderful/kind/helpful people, outdoor recreation opportunities second to none (fishing? – numerous species of trout fill the rivers and streams,), hiking, hunting, camping, exploring, great artisans, incredible geology, fantastic restaurants, GREAT FLY SHOP (Marlow’s Fly Shop – see Brad and Kris), mountain biking, winter sports, great weather, the BEST riverside (mainstream Wind River) Lodge and RV Resort I have encountered in the western U.S. (Longhorn Ranch Lodge and RV Resort – Randy, Sue and Chip run the place and they are awesome). This is a photographer’s nirvana.

The village of Dubois is surrounded by the Shoshone National Forest, The Fitzpatrick Wilderness (south) and the Absaroka Mountain Range. Just outside town you can drive south and enjoy The National Bighorn Sheep area. Make sure to visit the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center in downtown Dubois BEFORE you venture out as the information they provide will make your visit vastly more enjoyable.

Make sure you drive north out of town (two separate roads) into the Absaroka mountains…the pavement ends a few miles out of town but is well maintained. Get up to the Horse Creek Campground and beyond – to the Double Cabin Campground area for the phenomenal vistas of the massive peaks that surround you.

South of Dubois (3 miles) take a left turn (north) and get on Forest Service Road 511 to travel along the east fork of the Wind River and enjoy the vast and magnificent scenery – Ram’ s Horn is the peak that will get your attention…trust me.

If you’re out and about, this is Grizzly and Black bear country…ALWAYS have bear spray with you (EACH individual) – know how to use it (test it before you go out) and become familiar with making noise and how to handle a bear encounter when you venture out. BE BEAR AWARE in this area. Period.

The rivers and streams have cutthroat, rainbow, brown, brook and some golden trout. Guides and outfitters can be arranged through Marlow’s Fly Shop in Dubois. You can also float the Wind River Canyon.
