The Palacio de Correos de México, or Postal Palace of Mexico City

Postal Historico

Date of Visit: seis de febrero 2025

“This place leaves you speechless!”

Description below is an excerpt from the web:

The Postal Palace is an architectural gem with Plateresque and Isabelline styles. It was built by the Italian Adamo Boari and the Mexican Gonzalo Garita in 1902, and inaugurated in 1907 by order of President Porfirio Díaz , with the aim of having a space that could cover the needs of the postal service.

The building is filled with works of art such as gargoyles, marble ornaments and plaster work. The staircases are made of Mexican marble and the bronzes are made at the Pignone Foundry in Florence, Italy. The clock in the main building was imported from Germany by the Dienner Brothers and La Perla Jewelry Company. It had to be reassembled in Mexico, with pulley mechanisms and hydraulic and electrical systems.

Inside, marble floors and mantelpieces are combined with ironwork. Inside the conference rooms are frescoes by Bartolomeo Gallotti on 24-carat gold bases.

The building continues to function as a postal service and has a museum displaying historical objects and documents. On the second floor is the permanent exhibition of Postal Culture, which is the interactive room Introduction to Philately. It has a library with 8,500 volumes and 240 historical documents dating from 1580 to 1900.” End of excerpt.
