Summer Sunsets in Central Oregon

We recently camped on the Deschutes River arm of Wickiup Reservoir.

I captured these shots of an amazing sunset. I hope you enjoy them.

Winter Waterfall – Steelhead Falls

The seasons provide spectacular images of the natural beauty that surround us here in Central Oregon.

Reggie and I trekked into Steelhead Falls…with crampons and hiking poles. The hike – in a foot and a half of snow – was well worth it (Although I don’t recommend it for those who are not fit, and don’t have the appropriate winter hiking gear).

Steelhead Falls

A day hike several miles past the waterfall. This is an easy to moderate hike – depending upon how far you go past the falls. One must cross several boulder slides – past the falls – be careful.

IMG_5647

Caution: April through October – this is a snakey area. Be careful of rattlesnakes. Although this is an off-leash trail, the presence of venomous snakes requires you to keep control of your pet (leash).

Preparation: This is a deep canyon. Always be aware of hikers below and above you. Rock formations do release rock fall. Always carry an ample water supply (Camelbak bladder)…particularly in late spring, summer and fall as temperatures within the canyon may be substantially higher than at the trailhead. Hiking poles are recommended.

Directions to Steelhead Falls Trail:

Directions: From Terrebonne, Oregon turn West on Northwest Lower Bridge Way. Proceed a little more than 2 miles, then turn right on Northwest 43rd Street. Take that about 1.8 miles to Chinook Drive. From Chinook Drive, proceed just less than a mile and then turn left onto Badger Road. In a little more than a mile, turn right on Sage Hen Road. After about a half a mile, turn left on Ermine Road. Soon afterward turn left on Quail Road. Take Quail less than half a mile to River Road and turn right. Proceed on River Road downhill to the Steelhead Falls Trailhead. Vaulted bathrooms at trailhead. No water.

Wildlife: Eagles, butterflies, lizards, cougar, osprey, owls, bats, skunks, deer. For fisher persons – Brown and Rainbow trout.

November thru March enjoy the absence of reptiles.
